Painting of the Week: Apparition of St. Francis at Arles

This painting by Fra Angelico was part of the predella that belonged to a triptych of the Madonna and Child with Four Saints (known as the Compagnia di San Francesco Altarpiece), assigned to the convent of Santa Croce in Florence.

These five predella panels depict scenes from the St. Francis of Assisi’s life:

  1. Trial by Fire
  2. Receiving the Stigmata
  3. Meeting of St. Francis and St Dominic
  4. Apparition of St. Francis at Arles
  5. Lamentation over St. Francis

Among these five panels, Apparition of St. Francis at Arles is noted for its deep architectural setting, its luminary effects, and its atmospheric perspective.
